🌊 Types of Marine and Coastal Pollution 🌊
1. Plastic Pollution ♻️
- Most common marine debris (80% of ocean litter)
- Includes plastic bags, bottles, food containers, wrappers, synthetic ropes, fishing gear
- Enters ocean via littering, fishing activities, runoff, storm drains
- Impacts: entanglement, ingestion by marine animals, microplastics enter food chain
2. Nutrient Pollution 🌾
- Excess nitrogen and phosphorus from fertilizers and sewage
- Causes algal blooms → oxygen depletion → “dead zones” where marine life cannot survive
- Largest dead zone: Arabian Sea, 165,000 sq km
3. Nonpoint-Source Pollution 🌍
- Pollution from multiple diffuse sources: agricultural runoff, urban runoff, septic systems, construction sediment
- Includes fertilizers, pesticides, oil, grease, bacteria
- Hard to control due to many sources
4. Industrial Pollution 🏭
- Waste from factories: chemicals, acids, metals, sludge
- Leads to chemical contamination, dead zones, bioaccumulation of toxins (e.g., DDT, PFAS)
- Harms marine life and human health
5. Light Pollution 💡
- Artificial light from coastal urban areas
- Disrupts marine animals’ natural behaviors: migration, reproduction, feeding
- Affects 1.9 million sq km of coastal seas
6. Noise Pollution 🔊
- From ships, industrial activities, maritime equipment
- Interferes with marine mammals’ communication and navigation
7. Oil Pollution 🛢️
- From tanker spills, drilling leaks, ship discharges
- Kills marine wildlife and damages ecosystems
- Large spills less frequent but small spills common
⚠️ Key Facts
- 14 million tons of plastic enter oceans yearly
- 170 trillion plastic particles currently in oceans
- Over 100,000 marine animals die annually from plastic ingestion or entanglement
- Pollution originates mostly from land-based sources (80%)

🌊🐢 The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is a massive ocean trash zone in the North Pacific, about 1.6 million sq km-that’s twice the size of Texas! 🗺️🦀 It’s made up mostly of plastic debris, including around 705,000 tons of fishing nets 🎣 and millions of tiny plastic pieces 🧩. Ocean currents called gyres swirl this trash together, pulling in waste from Asia, North America, and even offshore sources like oil rigs and cargo ships 🚢⚓. The plastic density has skyrocketed from 2.9 kg/km² to 14.2 kg/km² in just 7 years 📈😱. This pollution is a nightmare for nearly 1,000 marine species 🐠🐬, causing harm through ingestion and entanglement, and even creating dead zones where little can survive ☠️🌍. It’s one of the biggest environmental crises our oceans face today! 🌐💔
